Jean- Paul Gaultier (born 24 April 1952 in Paris ) is a French fashion designer .
He apprenticed in the early 1970s at Patou and Pierre Cardin . He created his first ready-to-wear collection in 1976. He established the legend of fashion's enfant terrible , with his work that balanced between the radical and the conventional. He transformed the corset , the simplest and most traditional underwear , into a provocative outerwear. He introduced skirts for men and contributed to the acceptance of tattoos by the masses. He established the Gaultier commercial line (1988), designed for the cinema and collaborated with famous artists such as Madonna . Gaultier brought street fashion to the catwalk, combining it with shocking elements such as the ambiguous definition of gender, race and sexuality, with models of non-conformist or "true" types. In 1997 he moved to haute couture , showing in Paris.
